Comment Policy

Hate is not welcome here. If you’re thinking of posting something that is, for example, ableist, sexist, racist, antisemitic, xenophobic, homophobic, biphobic or transphobic (this is not an exhaustive list), just don’t.

Likewise, discussion and disagreement are fine but abuse, bullying, harassment and general asshattery are not.

Comments will be moderated and people will be banned if necessary.

Be excellent to each other, folks. There is enough bullshit in the world already. This place will not be adding to it.

Privacy Policy – The short version

Plot bunnies and plot holes is a personal website.

The site owner and admin is the user known as Kereru (Grace). Kereru can be contacted via the contact form or via emailing kereru at plotbunniesandplotholes dot net (replace “at” with @ and “dot net” with .net).

Our website address is: https://www.plotbunniesandplotholes.net. The site is powered by WordPress, hosted in the US, and your site admin is normally resident in New Zealand.

We genuinely value privacy and do not believe in unnecessary collection or sharing of information, using information for purposes other than what it was provided for, or tracking people all across the internet. Ugh.

We only collect information that is absolutely necessary to run the site. The vast majority of this is anonymous site analytics such as the number of site visits, page views, and general (country-level) location of visitors. Additional information may be collected if you use certain site functions, i.e. you leave a comment or use the contact form.

Some information is technically shared with WordPress and/or our web-hosting provider in order to run the site. Other than this, we do not share any information unless it is absolutely necessary to do so, for example if external technical support is required, or when required to do so by law.

We do not use your information for any other purposes. That’s not cool.

We do not sell any information, under any circumstances, ever.

We do not track you all across the internet. That’s creepy.

We do our best to keep this site as secure as possible, but in the unlikely event of a privacy breach that affects you, we will let you know as soon as we can.

If you have any questions about any of this, please use the contact form or email kereru at plotbunniesandplotholes dot net and we can have a chat.

Privacy – Notes on some specific site functions

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service Privacy Policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Anti-spam measures

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

Contact forms

The contact form requires a name and an email address, so that we can respond to you. It also logs your IP address to prevent spam. Submitting the contact form sends an automatic email to the site admin (kereru at plotbunniesandplotholes dot net) with your message, and responses will be sent from that email.

Subscribing via email

In order to subscribe via email to the blog or to replies to a specific post, we need your email address and the blog or post ID. In the event of a new subscription being initiated, we also collect some basic server data such as IP address, which is used exclusively for monitoring and preventing abuse and spam. Before you are added you will receive an email asking you to confirm your subscription, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Privacy breaches

We do our best to keep this site as secure as possible, but in the unlikely event of a privacy breach that affects you, we will let you know as soon as we can, keep you informed about what we’ve done about it, and review what we can do to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

Ecological Responsibility

Plot Bunnies is committed to being ecologically responsible. We aim to minimise the emissions created by the website and to not just offset, but to over-offset them, so we are ecologically in credit, not just ecologically neutral. You can read more about how we do this HERE and visit the Plot Bunnies Tree Nation Forest HERE.

If you have any questions about any of this, please use the contact form or email kereru at plotbunniesandplotholes dot net (replace “at” with @ and “dot net” with .net) and we will happily have a chat with you.
